Hi there!
How's everything? Remember to join the Zoom session at 12h30 today to solve some doubts and revise together the grammar points we covered in units 6 and the ones we'll come across in unit 7 (conditionals and passive voice).
Additionally, I here send you some more handouts for further grammar practice (key included) on conditionals and passive voice.
Later on, as we saw "first aid" last week in unit 6C, there are some vocabulary that you may find useful in this webpage. Then, click on the following Communicative activity, and speak together (via whatsapp, via skype, zoom, phone...) about: "Would you survive' What would you do. Do not read the answers at the very bottom. Then, once you've talked together, you can both read them and check everything.
Now, let's do some pronunciation: I here send you a pronunciation activity based on a poem. We'll focus on short vowels. First, say the sounds in isolation. Then, read the poem aloud. Record it (for you). Listen to the poem twice. Repeat it and record it again. Compare both versions! To be more fluent, you can read it faster and faster:)
And to finish off, read this article about "5 speaking rules" Write your opinion here (comments below).

Speaking 5 rules you need to know.
ReplyDeleteI found very interesting the first idea, don't study grammar too much, I agree up to a point, because when I was at highschool, and even myself I saw a lot of people that were unable to speak fluently because they always thought the structure they should use, before. Nonetheless, it's true that is better to speak and commit some mistakes rather than be in silence, because you wouldn't learn anything.
About study phrases, I couldn't agree more, I have to say that is my problem when I study vocabulary, because after learn some words, you have to know how to use it, and here is where I fail. So from now to then, I would write a phrase next to the word, to understand it better.
Regarding to translate, I wouldn't be so sure about that, since sometimes, mainly when you are not very fluent could be useful. But I have to side with the writer, because translate in English could also make you commit a mistake.
And finally, I found interesting the third idea, because it's true that It doesn't make sense that speak would be the last thing that you learn when you are trying to speak a language. And I believe, that It would be very useful to improve this skill between all the people that is learning another language.
My opinion about the article is that:
ReplyDeleteIf we have to learn grammar or not, that is pretty confuse for me, because we need to be passed an exam and of course we need to be studied grammar, it’s necessary if we want to pass the final exam. I wish I hadn’t these pressure and we might have a fluent in English.
About if we need to learnt phrases I totally agree, as well as learning a lot of words, that sometimes we don’t know how to use in context, I believe that is easier understand a language if you know some phrases. I would also like to point out to about translation. These point it very controversial for me; because I need to understand the text I have read or learnt. I’m aware of that sometimes shouldn’t do it, on the other hand other times it helps me a lot.
The article say that the natural order to learn a language is listening, speaking, reading and then writing, we don’t do in these way. What is clear is that if we want to learn a language we need to practice and practice and it won’t depend on the natural order to learn.
We know that the better submerge yourself have in English, the better fluent English you will have, but nowadays, is not necessary to go abroad, you only need to surround yourself with English.
Regarding if we study the right material, “who knows nobody?- Sings Rapahael. Everybody believe what we study or learn is correct and the best way, but something we are doing badly because we don’t speak as more fluent we can.
To sum up, I would like to say is that learning a language, English for instance is sometime beautiful and sometimes very hard, because all we need is time, and sometime we don’t have enough. I’m really sure if we had more time, we would be spending this time in learning phrases, practice and surrounded with English, etc but this is what you get. In addition, I would say that I’m pretty pleased about the time I have spent in my learning.
